God is

The Bible and the Qur'an admit the truths that God exists, that He is One, and that He is the Creator and Judge of all.

There is a large overlap in Biblical and Qur'anic views of the One God, although there are differing emphases regarding His attributes.

One of the most valuable studies is of the names of God in the Qur'an and the Hebrew Bible, not least because many of the Hebrew and Arabic names are cognates.

God speaks

The Bible and the Qur'an admit the truths that God speaks, that God speaks through prophets, and that God gives Books.

But there are different ideas about what is revealed, about the place of prophets in sacred history, about how the Books came into being, and about which books should be accepted.

This calls for study of Biblical and Qur'anic views of revelation and of scripture; and of the big-picture of sacred history in the different Books.

God comes

The Bible and the Qur'an admit the truth that God is both transcendent and immanent. That is, He is both supremely high above all of His creation, and closely present within His creation.

But the Bible strongly develops the idea of God's coming in a visible presence - in fire and cloud at Sinai, and in flesh in the person of Jesus the Messiah.

Key comparative study can begin with the Qur'an's account of Moses meeting with God on Sinai, and its understanding of Jesus as 'God's Word.

Learning from history

The concept of using admitted truth as a basis for dialogue can be traced back to key historical figures such as John of Damascus (died 749 AD) and Mar Timothy (died 823 AD).

Theological themes

We explore the themes which appear in Christian-Muslim dialogue using the lens of 'admitted truth'. These include God, human nature, scripture, prophethood, law, justice, life after death and the last days.
